The Metric System Explained

Engineering and construction: Structural calculations use exact values. A 1% error in a load-bearing calculation is not acceptable. Always use full-precision values from a reliable reference.

Medicine and pharmacology: Drug dosages are calculated in precise milligrams or micrograms per kilogram of body weight. Never round aggressively in a medical context.

Scientific research: Significant figures matter. When reporting measurements, retain only as many digits as your measurement instrument can reliably produce — excess digits imply false precision.

Quick Mental Math Tricks

These shortcuts let you estimate unit conversions in your head with reasonable accuracy:

  • Miles to kilometers:Multiply by 1.6, or more precisely, add 60% to the original number. 50 miles → 50 + 30 = 80 km (actual: 80.5 km).
  • Celsius to Fahrenheit:Double the Celsius temperature and add 30 for a quick estimate. 20°C → 40 + 30 = 70°F (actual: 68°F).
  • Kilograms to pounds:Multiply by 2 and add 10%. 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lbs (actual: 154.3 lbs). Remarkably accurate.
  • Liters to gallons:Divide by 4 for a rough US gallon estimate. 8 liters → 2 gallons (actual: 2.11 gallons).

Imperial vs. Metric: Why the US Uses Both

The United States is one of only three countries in the world (alongside Myanmar and Liberia) that has not officially adopted the metric system as its primary measurement standard. This creates the common situation of Americans needing to convert between systems regularly.

In practice, most US industries already use metric units extensively: medicine, science, military, and most manufacturing operations work in metric. The holdout is everyday consumer life — road signs, body weight, recipe measurements, and retail.

Temperature: Understanding the Three Scales

Three temperature scales are in common use: Fahrenheit (°F), Celsius (°C), and Kelvin (K). Fahrenheit is used primarily in the US for everyday purposes.
