About John
John Robins is the Editor-in-Chief of CrunchWise. A serial entrepreneur, he founded Integrated Sales & Marketing and The Job Market Pty Ltd, building businesses from the ground up over a career spent reading balance sheets, pricing decisions, and cash flow.
He is also a hands-on real estate investor, owning and managing multiple residential properties across Australia and in Oregon, USA. That experience — mortgages, refinancing, property taxes, currency exchange, and the day-to-day math of being a landlord on two continents — directly informs the home, mortgage, and savings coverage on this site.
In recent years John has studied the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement closely, with a particular interest in how working people can use disciplined saving, sensible debt, and long-horizon compounding to build durable independence. He holds final editorial responsibility for everything CrunchWise publishes — checking the formulas, the sources, and the reviewed dates before anything ships.
Areas of Focus
- • Real estate investing, mortgages, and the true cost of homeownership (PITI, PMI, refinancing).
- • Property ownership across jurisdictions — Australia and the United States.
- • High-yield savings, CDs, and compound interest over long horizons.
- • FIRE strategy: savings rate, withdrawal rates, and financial independence math.
- • Small-business and entrepreneurial finance.
Editorial Process
Every financial calculator on CrunchWise is built from a published, authoritative formula — no “approximations” unless they are explicitly labeled. Examples:
- • Mortgage payment: M = P[r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n − 1] — standard amortization.
- • Federal tax: current IRS bracket schedule, verified against the IRS Revenue Procedure.
- • Compound interest with contributions: P(1+r/n)^(nt) + PMT × [((1+r/n)^(nt) − 1) / (r/n)].
Guides that reference time-sensitive numbers (APYs, tax brackets, Fed rates, mortgage averages) are marked with an “Updated [date]” tag and reviewed on a rolling basis. Read the full editorial policy.
